Twilight vs Harry Potter …. J.K.Rowling vs Stephenie Meyer …. The debate is never ending and the topic is mostly confined to “Whether Twilight is as good as Harry Potter and not less “. I spent most part of my Diwali holidays completing the Twilight series . The Twilight followed by The New Moon , The Eclipse , The Breaking Dawn and the leaked draft of The Midnight Sun .

And after doing so , I can safely participate in the debate now and can very confidently conclude that Stephenie Meyer is not as good , infact not anywhere even close to J.K.Rowling . There are only three categories of people , who I suppose will disagree with me .

First , those who are a die hard fan of Romance will surely stand against Potter . Twilight is a lot more about romance and relationships rather than Vampires or Werewolves .

Secondly , those who have read “Twilight” and not “Harry Potter” will of course go with Meyer .

Third category include people ( and there are a lot of them ) who think Harry Potter is just for  kids .

The Potter series was completely in another league compared to Twilight . J.K.Rowling created a completely brand new world of magic , at each and every point one finds himself more and more intrigued to the plot . The way she used the mythological creatures , sketched the plot so efficiently , came up with a mind blowing magical game named Quidditch was just something Meyer was unable to even reach close to .

Twilight posed no competition to Harry Potter . How could someone even compare these two books . There was not even a single point in Potter series that I found myself bored and wished to take a break , but there were many stretches in Meyer’s book which left me droozing and wishing it to end as soon as possible ( especially when Bella and Edward spent pages just being in awe of each other ) .

I am not suggesting that Twilight is not worth reading . Its a fantastic series but not comparable to Harry Potter or Lord of The Rings .

Why is Rowling better than Meyer ????

  • Twilight will appeal only to a certain section of society , others will find it very difficult to digest . Meyer hasn’t put in even a small percentage of imagination than what Rowling has put in . Although there are vampires and werewolves lurking around , there is nothing magical about it , its all just a romantic love story .
  • Rowling has obviously put in a lot of hard work in creating the plot . Meyer had a fantastic idea , but somehow everything not sounded so fantastic on paper ( atleast not to me ) .
  • Climax was what disappointed me a lot . Maybe it was difficult since the story is narrated from the point of view of Bella , but the climax could not have been more simple and less interesting . For instance , Edward going to Volturi in “New Moon” and coming out untouched without any twists and turns . Maybe thats the way love stories are meant to .
  • Bella kept on narrating the unnatural angel like beauty of Edward for chapters and chapters and chapters . Sometimes I felt like skimming through the chapters .
  • Twilight was way too predictable . The characters were not that strong . The characters of Edward Cullen and Jacob Black were good , but not excellent . Maybe everything was written in a bit of hurry .

Well no offense meant to Twilight fans . The series was good but not phenomenal like I heard it to be . Its so much overrated ( just like Ricky Ponting is :P )

My Final Verdict : Wizards win . Vampires lose .

Harsh Singh, possibly the most infamous engineering student ever to be held in NCR fortress, is still eluding capture, RKGIT management confirmed today.

“We are doing all we can to recapture Singh,” said the Director of RKGIT, K.B.Naik, this morning, “and we beg the engineering community to remain calm.”

Naik has been criticized by some members of the IEEE and CSI for informing the UPTU chancellor of the crisis.

“Well, really, I had to, don’t you know,” said an irritable Naik.

“Singh is mad. He’s a danger to any studious fellow who crosses him, engineer or non-engineer. I have the Chancellor’s assurance that he will not breathe a word of Singh’s true identity to anyone. And let’s face it-who’d believe him if he did?”

While Professors have been told that Singh is on a medical leave, the RKGIT management lives in fear of a mass bunk like that of twelve months ago, when Singh convinced everyone to bunk thirteen classes in a row.

Please don’t panic and think that I have gone mad …… neither did I intend to challenge the copyrights of J.K.Rowling ….. Actually I am back  home for bunk cum dussehra holidays……and I was unable to come up with anything interesting to blog about ….. so just thought about posting something crazy ….. came up with this post….. I dedicate this post to all the classes that I bunked last month …….

It was one of those hot june afternoons a few years back……Summer holidays were going on …. Projects were pending …who cares……. I was lazily surfing through different channels ….. bored of the summer holidays …… Suddenly a 60 feet monster with something like a deformed baseball bat in his hand zoomed in front of my eyes ….. He was on his way to destruction when one of those weird looking kids poked his stick into that monster’s nose …. and the other one muttered something like “Wingardium Laviosa” …. and the monster was a goner ……then there appeared few more of those crazy guys …. and one old lady amidst them muttered few words like “detention” and “points”……I was completely baffled…….It failed to extract interest out of me at the outset…….but I continued with the movie…….. Bit by bit I started feeling the inclination towards the movie and as I approached the last scene my point of view flipped 180 ……….. that was my first encounter with J K Rowling’s world of Witchcraft and Wizardy ……… Next day , in my school library I got my hands around the first book of Harry Potter’s series …. Philosopher’s Stone …. The magic in the book , platform number 9¾ , magical creatures , death eaters , friendship between ron , harry and hermione , quidditch and the Dark Lord appeared so real ….. Rowling knew how to play with the pen ….. The complete book was just magical ….. far amazing than the movie ….. Magic inside the book didn’t allow me to drift my eyes even for a moment……and by the time I read last word of last page I was already a part of the millions of people across the globe who were hypnotised by amazing world of Harry Potter ……

Five months after publication the initial book won its first award, a Nestlé Smarties Book Prize. In February, the novel won the prestigious British Book Award for Children’s Book of the Year, and later, the Children’s Book Award. The Mail on Sunday rated it as “the most imaginative debut since Roald Dahl“; a view echoed by the Sunday Times (“comparisons to Dahl are, this time, justified”), while The Guardian called it “a richly textured novel given lift-off by an inventive wit” and The Scotsman said it had “all the makings of a classic”.

In 2001 a film based on the book was released and after becoming the highest grossing film ever in the UK it went on to earn $976.5 million at the worldwide box office making it the second highest grossing film in history at the time. As of 2008, it is the fourth highest-grossing film of all-time, behind Titanic, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. Further films based on the subsequent books have made Harry Potter the highest grossing film series of all time, ahead of the James Bond and Star Wars franchises. The success of the series and its tie-in merchandise, have led the Harry Potter brand to be valued at $15 billion, and J.K. Rowling becoming the UK’s richest woman, thought to be worth more than one billon US dollars.

Though the fantasy of Hogwarts has now ended with Lord Voldemort and the Deathly Hallows …… still those seven magical books …… with all the elements of pathos , tragedy , comedy . romance , sacrifices , friendship , and finally the win of the right over the wrong …….appear so real and amazing that a muggle like me can’t help but to read them again and again …….
